Day 1 After the participants have met up and collected their rental gear, it’s off to the Diavolo via ferrata above the Schöllenen Gorge. Here, the guide will teach the basic skills and cover the main aspects of via ferrata climbing. The Diavolo via ferrata has a K2-3 rating and is fitted with 700 meters of steel cables, 265 iron pitons and rungs and two ladders, making it the ideal climb for beginners. The route starts out steep and a bit dizzying, passing over an impressive ridge in step-like terrain. The next section alternates between plate-like cliff bands and grassy patches. Enjoy enthralling views into the depths of the Schöllen Gorge and down at the Teufelsbrücke (“Devil’s Bridge”). A longer traverse to the left takes climbers to the final section of the route: a chute, an exposed cliff section and finally a vertical ladder that leads to the edge of the Tüfelstallboden (approx. 1860 m above sea level), a lovely resting spot marked by the Uri flag with a view of the saw-toothed granite of the Salbitschijen. To return to Andermatt, follow the Chilchenberg or Nätschen hiking trails or ride the train on the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn.
